A fundamental function of the Sikh Temple or Gurdwara is the Langar – the free food that is prepared in the temple for visitors.

The tradition was instigated by Guru Nanak, the first of the Sikh Gurus. The food is vegetarian and is served to anyone who enters the temple as a sign that all are equal, no matter what religion, gender or age they are. Before this, different castes would have to eat separately as a sign of their different status.

All the food is prepared and served by volunteers in the local Sikh community.
