Operation Blue Star

Today is the 27th anniversary of Operation Blue Star – the Indian army’s assault on the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Hundreds of Sikhs, including women and children, were massacred by the army who assaulted the temple because they believed it to be a militant stronghold. The incident led to the assassination of the prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, which then led to the 1984 Sikh Riots in India.
